Yesterday, (I am writing at the beginning of the month), I noticed a few flowers on a Red Gum. In the past May has been the earliest I have seen it flowering, which is when I expected it to start performing this year. It did so two seasons ago. It is one of those trees that have an enormous range as to when it will set bud and flower. In some years the first flowers might not appear until August (or later in higher country).
